Week 12 Sequential Scan

At the end of my first trimester, I was sent to a specialist who screened for Down's Syndrome, Trisomy 18, Spinebifida, and other defects. So far, all of the tests have come back negative, which is the desired result, and I have a second screening during the second trimester to verify the negative results.

Even though this was a serious screening, it was a BLAST! I had no idea what I was in store for at this visit, which meant I didn't have any expectations. They had more advanced technology and I was able to see so much more of the baby! I could see fingers, joints, and even ears! I was also able to lay back and watch the baby on a big flat screen TV. It was so amazing to see the baby with such clarity and on a larger screen. The baby was extremely active too. I saw every hand movement, kick, and tumble. I couldn't believe how active the baby was...I swear I saw a few roundhouse kicks(just teasing)! I also got to hear the hearbeat for the first time. Like I said, I wasn't expecting this, so the minute I heard it, I burst into tears. I was a little embarassed, but so elated to hear that heart beat. I couldn't believe that was beating inside me...so miraculous! For an entire half hour, I got to watch the baby. At the end of the session, the doctor asked if I had any more questions and I said, "Yeah, is it a boy or a girl." She said she would leave me alone with the technicians and they could look around. They did make a prediction, but said to wait for the doctor to verify it. So, we have an idea, but we aren't saying much until we know for sure...stay tuned!
